Which Pie Would You Choose?

Yesterday we baked! It was a lot of fun for everyone and in the words of our Kinder’s the mini pies were “delicious!”

The idea to bake mini pies came shortly after our inquiry about the pumpkin patch and apple orchard which lended itself to after Thanksgiving. There  was a lot of talking about the different foods we ate. During play, we observed some of our students making “pie” for their own Thanksgiving dinner in our classroom and it was suggested (with excitement) that maybe we could make our own pies! For real.

So, we decided to bake some mini pies!

First, we make a t chart and took a survey to see who wanted which pie.  Our SK’s remembered that when we make a t chart you need a title and some tally marks to keep track of who wants what.

We tallied up our totals and split in to two groups (those who wanted to make apple pie and those who wanted to make pumpkin pie. Once in our groups we discussed what we needed to get started. How would we know how to make the pies? A few of our students shared their baking experiences at home and suggested we needed a recipe. So, we looked up a recipe for each pie and wrote an ingredients list.

Once we had our recipe, it was time to star measuring out the things/amounts we needed. All the students were eager to have a turn!

We had lots of fun discussing what was happening/the things we noticed/smelled (i.e., “I needa stir this really good so it get’s all mixed together!” “This sugar looks like sand!” “This smells just like the pumpkin pie we have at our house. ”

Once everything was mixed and chopped we scooped our fillings into our pies and took a trip to the staff room so the teacher’s could put our pies in the oven. We put them in the oven, and headed to library. Mrs. Patzer read us a great story about a girl who made apple pie, but she had to travel all over the world to get her ingredients because her grocery store was closed. We found this book really funny! On our way back we could smell our delicious pies in the oven! This created much excitement!

After recess we came in and our pies were baked and cooled! We could’t wait to try them! Some of the reactions included, “This is SO DE-LISCIOUS!” “I can’t wait to try this!” “My favourite part is the pumpkin/apple in the middle!”

We have had a new inquiry forming in our classroom over the last week or so.  Some of the children have expressed interest in transforming our McDonald’s in to a Farmers Market/Pumpkin Patch/Apple Picking orchard.

If you have any items you are willing to donate to this (i.e., small pumpkins/gourds (real or dollar store items) any baskets, aluminum pie trays etc.) they would be greatly appreciated 🙂
