Here’s what we’ve explored this week in our classroom regarding literacy 🙂
We had such success implementing 3 part math lessons in to our FDK program last year, that we decided to implement this structure in to our literacy program as well. During this time the children have an opportunity to explore many different literacy materials, which allows them to work at their own pace and developmental level.
These materials can include, magnetic letters with white boards and markers, letters and links, play dough, letter cookie cutters and name tags, clipboards, pencils and objects around the room, books and magnifying glasses (think letter hunt!).
At the beginning of this time we do a short “Minds On”…this is our opportunity to introduce new concepts (either as a whole group or in small groups) This week we have been learning/refreshing the concepts of letters/sounds  “Aa” and “Ss”.
After our “Minds On”, the children are free to explore the literacy materials. At this point, some children will work with either Ms. Caietta or Mrs. LeBlanc on specific concepts in a guided group. These groups consist of about 4-6 children.
The end of our 3 part literacy lesson includes a “Consolidation” piece. We give a few students an opportunity to share what they did/learned with the materials, while the guided group consolidates their specific concept separately.
